Google deletes over 80 lakh negative reviews to bring TikTok’s rating to 4.4 stars – Janta Express Daily

Google had to delete over 80 lakh negative reviews on Google Play to help TikTok get back to an overall app rating of 4.4 stars. The Chinese social media platform’s rating fell to as low as 1.2 stars. This is mainly due to the social media backlash against TikTok in India over a video by popular TikTok content creator Faizal Siddiqui which was showcased violence against women.
While Siddiqui denied the allegation and claimed that one of his old videos were edited to mislead viewers, the National Commission of Women intervened following which TikTok suspended Siddiqui’s account.
Having said that, the controversy started after a video by YouTube celebrity Carry Minati in which he roasted a TikTok star. The video got over 70 million views, but was taken down after reports of cyberbullying. This angered fans of Carry Minati and who tweeted for the ban of TikTok in India.
TikTok witnessed a massive rise in negative reviews on Google Play following both these incidents, especially from users in India. For TikTok, India is the largest user base outside China.
Google doesn’t allow spam and fake reviews on Google Play and this could be one of the reasons as to why it had deleted the negative reviews of TikTok.
Meanwhile, TikTok may have another big reason to worry in India. A rival app launched in April 2020 called Mitron has crossed over 50 lakh downloads and is among the top 10 most popular apps in the country right now on Google Play Store. The Mitron app is made by IIT-Roorkee alumnus Shivank Agarwal and his team based out of Bengaluru. Available free on Android, the app is a short video and social platform similar to TikTok.
